Nurturing Learner Agency in Reading Workshop

Nurturing Learner Agency in Reading Workshop Tokyo International School hosts Columbia University (New York) Teachers College staff developers: Katie Clements and Christine Holley annually. This November the focus was infusing even more agency into a writing workshop. Some of the very latest thinking from the Teachers College is to infuse further agency into a writing workshop. Ideas included: students ascertaining, selecting and voicing their own writing goals, actively engaging learners in writing conferences from the onset, making conceptual references to learners' own lives and experience in order to support learners to think conceptually about the intention. This video takes what we learned in professional development about writing workshop and transferring and applying these ideas into reading workshop context. This process deepens our personal understanding of student driven / student centered literacy practice and helps leverage our pedagogy at TIS.
