A search and rescue mission has been launched after a Chilean Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft disappeared with 38 people on board while flying to a military base in Antarctica, announced Brigadier General Eduardo Mosqueira Cruz of the Chilean Air Force during a presser from the Chabunco Air Force Base in Punta Arenas, Monday night.

"Every year we give logistical support to the base and we are constantly carrying cargo, specialists and scientists. So this was one more work within the routine of every month. Always we come one week every month to do the Antarctic campaign," stated the Brigadier General.

The plane, which took off at 16:55 local time (19:55 GMT) on Monday from Punta Arenas, in the southernmost part of Chile, was expected to land at 19:17 (22:17 GMT) at the Chilean Antarctic military base President Eduardo Frei Montalva and, according to local sources, had a sufficient fuel load to fly for several hours further.

According to Chilean military sources, after finalising the flight autonomy, the Chilean Air Force declared the aircraft as "damaged."
