Saturating the track from an insert reduces the dynamics so you have to weigh the pros and cons before deciding, if you don't want to affect this then go with the #parallel trick.

The only thing we did was to increase the MIC gain until we obtained the desired color, then reduced OUTPUT to unity gain.
