The Pulse - Elderly Care: Are we doing enough?

The Pulse - Elderly Care: Are we doing enough? August 21st is marked as the World Senior Citizen's Day every year. The day was first proclaimed on December 14, 1990 by the United Nations General Assembly, and is meant to raise awareness about issues related to the elderly. In fact, for all of us the day is a reminder to collectively work for the welfare of older persons. Globally, the elderly population constitutes about 12% of the total population. By 2050, around 2 billion people, which is over 20 per cent of the world's population, will be 60 years or above. One in six people in the world will be over the age of 65 by 2050, up from one in 11 in 2019. In India too, the size and percentage of elderly population is expected to surge in the coming decades. The relatively young India of today will turn into a rapidly ageing population in the coming years. In fact, the elderly population is likely to reach around 300 million by 2050 , accounting for nearly 20% of the total population of the country. This means we need to be prepared for this demographic transition where one-fifth of our population will comprise of the elderly.
