Story line Officer Norman Hughes of the MPD (and Laverne's boyfriend) has developed a new pilot program for women, LAMP: Ladies' Auxiliary Milwaukee Police. Norman is so gung-ho for the athletic Laverne to be a LAMP...but not delicate Shirley. Norman is proud of his group of hearty volunteers. At the training session to teach volunteers to run an obstacle course within 40 seconds, Norman's misogynist Chief thinks Shirley is typical of his "dame" recruits, who are better suited to barefoot and pregnant than police. Incensed, Laverne rubs her "L" in the Chief's face, and with seconds to spare. But, everyone knows there will be no peace for Laverne until Shirley gets a chance to try...and that means Laverne will have to help her.
