WARNING: Graphic content. This one is really tough to watch, but it’s been sent to me countless times, mostly by police officers we’ve trained over the years. The man in the video is intoxicated and is suspected of shoplifting earlier that morning. The female officer tries to arrest him inside his house but when she gets overpowered and loses control, she draws her weapon and unintentionally shoots the suspect’s mother (who was trying to help her throughout the entire incident). Even though it was clear that the officer was overwhelmed at every stage of the altercation, it's important to remember that police officers don't get to choose the training they receive. It's the Police Chiefs and Training Commanders who make all the decisions. Unfortunately, it often takes a tragic outcome like this for a department to make the changes that would better equip officers for worst case scenarios like these. We'd like to invite the officer in the video, as well as the head defensive tactics instructor from her department to attend our 5-day GST law enforcement course free of charge. I really hope they accept the offer.
