Meet the Virginia Soap Maker Who is Protecting Forests Halfway Around the World Palm oil production is moving at a frightening pace. Though the palm oil industry has destroyed millions of acres of tropical forest - land still continues to be burned to create the palm plantations that supply the world’s shampoo, soap, lipstick and many other personal care products. Dr. Varsha Vijay, an environmental scientist, says deforestation increases carbon emissions and species loss, accelerating the pace of climate change and shrinking biodiversity. Yasmine Bandali-Alvarado learned how to make soap from her father but quickly changed her recipes when she learned about the brutal effect of palm oil on the environment. Now she hopes to raise awareness of palm oil to provide an alternative to the growing demand for the product.
