While a standard home insurance policy does have a provision that can potentially provide coverage for liability, the physical damage of the golf cart would have to be added to the policy by endorsement. It’s important to note that not all insurance companies offer the this endorsement. It’s also important to note that the restrictions and conditions of the coverage for both liability and physical damage make the coverage extremely limited.
For example, if the golf cart is registered for use on public roadways – no coverage. If it’s not registered for use on public roadways but it should be – no coverage. Then there are size restrictions – designed to hold no more than 4 people….max speed not to exceed 25 miles per hour. Then there are usage restriction, can be used only at the golf course or driving to or from the golf course or in restricted communities where there is an HOA.
With so many restrictions and conditions on this coverage, I always tell my customers not to rely on the home insurance for coverage but instead purchase the golf cart it’s own policy. Not only is the coverage far less restrictive, you’re also not jeopardizing your home insurance policy with a golf cart related incident.
