Look ahead to Sunday's Uruguay election

Look ahead to Sunday's Uruguay election (21 Nov 2019) Thousands of Uruguayans preparing to vote for their next president gathered at the closing campaign rallies for their respective candidates in Montevideo on Wednesday.

On Sunday, residents of the small South American country, renowned for its stability in a region rocked by social unease, will have to choose between the official candidate Daniel Martínez of the ruling Broad Front party, and the challenger Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou, who leads a coalition of five parties ranging from right to center-left.

Broad Front came into power in 2005 and since then has not been defeated at the polls.

But most analysts estimate that this could change on Sunday.

Opinion polls show that Lacalle Pou has a voting intention ranging from 51% to 47%, while Martínez, the former mayor of Montevideo, has between 43% and 42% of the preferences.
