Protesters streamed out of the campus Monday morning after the president of Hong Kong Polytechnic University announced that police had agreed to suspend the use of force.
It appeared the protesters were seeking to escape, while the police wanted to arrest them.
Officers fired tear gas at the protesters, who climbed over a fence and headed back inside the campus.
The development came after police breached the barricades outside the university and dragged away some of the protesters.
