4000 Coasters turned up on Sunday the 17th to express their frustration and concern about the impact of Government legislation on the Coast way of life.
With only a couple of exceptions all Coast leaders were present.

Mike Newcombe Chairman of Westpower.
Mike Newcombe, former owner and managing director of Newpower Streat, one of New Zealand's biggest nation-wide electrical contracting and servicing companies, has been in the electrical contracting industry for over twenty-five years, after commencing employment with the West Coast Electric Power Board in 1962. Mike established Newpower in 1981 and developed the company into a highly successful enterprise. After the acquisition of Streat Electrical in 1998, Newpower Streat had a turnover of $25 million and employed 180 skilled staff operating from a network of ten customer service bases throughout New Zealand. The Newpower Streat business was sold in 1999 to Tyco International, a corporation with revenues of more than $US35 billion worldwide. Mike now works as a Director and Trustee for a number of organisations.
Katie Milne the Chair of New Zealand Federated farmers
Federated Farmers president Katie Milne wears many hats but first and foremost is advocating for farmers to ensure they get a fair deal.
Ian Hustwick the Chair of the West Power Trust.
Since election to the Trust in 2006 lan has focused on his role as a consumer representative, and has contributed to Westpower’s business development through the Statement of Corporate Intent. Ian is a Mining Engineer with over 30 years of experience in mining operations, management and marketing both in New Zealand and internationally. He is actively involved in the coal industry. Ian brings a wide range of knowledge, commitment, experience and community involvement to the Trust. Ian wants to contribute to a stable, efficient and affordable electric power supply for both domestic and commercial users in the Trust’s area. Ian is supportive of Westpower’s business diversification into consulting and plans for power generation on the West Coast. He sees this opportunity as a means of maintaining the distribution network at a high standard while keeping charges to consumers as low as possible.
Richard Tacon CEO of Bathurst Group.
Richard has worked in almost every role in coal mining since starting his career in the 1970s. Richard’s first job in the industry was at Greymouth’s Liverpool State Mine and after working in Australia for 32 years, Richard returned to Wellington, New Zealand to take up the position of Chief Operating Officer at Bathurst in 2012. He was appointed to the role of Chief Executive Officer in March 2015. Richard is the Chair of the Coal Association of New Zealand and sits on the board of the New Zealand Mines Rescue Trust and Straterra.
Richard is a director of BT Mining Limited as a Bathurst representative.
