ELECTRIC LINES OF FORCE,ELECTROSTATICS(PART-6),CLASS-XII,CHAPTER-2,EXPLAINED IN BENGALI,P4URKD Electric field intensity is a vector quantity.the direction of electric field intensity is found by drawing electric field line in electric field.
if we allow to move a free unit positive charge in electric field region, the path follows by the unit positive charge drawn in the region shows the electric lines of force.
there are many properties of electric lines of force.
main property of lines of force is...
the tangent drawn at any point of of electric lines of force gives direction of electric lines of force at that point.
the other properties are....
1. field line starts from positive charge and ends at negative charge
2. for a single positive charge field line starts from positive charge and ends negative charged sphere at infinity
3.for a single negative charge field line starts at positive charged sphere placed at infinity and ends at negative charge
4. they contract lengthwise,which explains the attraction between unlike charges
5. they repeal side-wise, which explains repulsion between like charges
6. no two lines of force intersect each other as at the intersection point we got two separate direction of electric lines of force, for a single vector it is not possible
7. lines of force emerges from a charged surface perpendicularly, if not there may be a movement of charges in the surface,in electrostatics which is not possible
8. electric lines of force are open but magnetic lines of force closed, which actually explain the basic difference between electric and magnetic field.
