Building community through food in skid row, the epicenter of L.A.'s homelessness crisis | Off Menu

Building community through food in skid row, the epicenter of L.A.'s homelessness crisis | Off Menu This week, Lucas visits the skid row community in downtown L.A. There, he meets up with several organizations dedicated to serving the community in different ways. Skid Row Coffee operates in the Los Angeles Public Library and employs people from the skid row community in workplace training programs to build better ideas around health-conscious foods. Skid Row People's Market directly serves the community, offering and promoting inexpensive fresh foods and a friendly shopping environment. Los Angeles Community Action Network (LACAN) offers a space for teaching low-income and homeless individuals with various real-world opportunities. Lucas visited on a Thursday when LACAN hosted its weekly open-mic day for musicians, singers and poets. The organization also boasts a rooftop garden to teach locals how to grow fresh fruits and vegetables.
