At the turn of the 20th century, Brownsville had no electric services. The only lighting at home was provided by kerosene lamps. Residents and community leaders knew Brownsville needed modern conveniences to prosper.
In 1907, the City Council approved an election for an electrical, water and wastewater utility system after 150 taxpayers signed a petition asking for the issuance of bonds to finance its own utility system. Brownsville residents voted unanimously in favor of this.
The electric and water plant utility was accepted in July 1908 and life in Brownsville began to change.
