Political Beliefs Based on Personality?

Big 5 personality test!


Does our personality impact which political party we tend to favor more? In other words, do some of our personality traits dictate whether we tend to be more liberal or conservative?

Research has shown that actually yes, personality can play a role in whether we tend to lean more liberal or conservative! Studies on the Big 5 personality test show a statistically significant correlation between the domains of openness to experience and liberalism and conscientiousness and conservatism. The other domains of extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism show a weak correlation between being linked to a particular political ideology.

People who score high on the domain of openness to experience tend to enjoy trying new things, stepping out of their comfort zone, being more adventurous and tend to also be more creative and open minded. These people tend to lean more liberal than their non open peers which makes sense because liberals place less of a high value on sticking to the status quo and sticking with what is already working like conservatives do.

People who score high on the domain of conscientiousness tend to be very orderly, organized, efficient, competent, and great at sticking to and creating deadlines and finishing goals and tasks in an efficient manner. Interestingly, people who score high on the domain of conscientiousness tend to lean more conservative than their less conscientious peers which also makes sense because conservatives tend to place a higher value on rules and order than liberals do.

Hopefully this research linking personality and preferred political party can give you a better insight into why someone sees issues the way they do and prioritizes the things they do, along with the multitude of other factors that influence someone's political ideology!
