Writing to Jewish Christians, the writer of the Letter to the Hebrews states in 12:14-15, "Pursue peace with all people and holiness without which no one will see the Lord; looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble and by this many become defiled." So, 3 ways to become lost spiritually and separated from Jesus:
1. Lack of holiness, no one sees the Lord;
2. Lack of holy living, fall short of grace of God;
3. Root of bitterness cases many to become defiled (unclean, separated from Jesus).
And Apostle John writes in 1 John 2:15-17 (accurate translation of present tense of Greek verb to English):
"Do not GO ON LOVING the world or the things in the world. If anyone GOES ON LOVING the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world - the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life - is not of the Father but is of the world.
And the world is passing away and the lust of it, but he who GOES ON DOING the will of God GOES ON ABIDING forever."
So clear then isn't it? If one goes on loving the world's lusts and pride, this obviously is outside holiness and therefore the love of the Father is not in him/her. Must go on living holy lifestyle to go on doing will of God so we can go on abiding in Jesus forever.
