I had a friend I’ve known ever since August 25, 2012 who I used to rape in Smash Melee for years. I was basically his senpai at the game because of how much I played the game with him and trained him to have most of the skill he’s developed in this game. Playing as an absolute troll taught him to never be phased by anything that happens in the game. He never gets upset no matter how hard he gets raped. My lessons were never anything explicitly. We just played the game and he got better through mere experience. Eventually, sometime after we stopped playing with each other, he reached his best tournament placing of 3rd out of 51 entrants. But I initially retired on March 11, 2016 and a few months after that, I gave him my hard drive of my moment video archives to him to hold onto because I know how much of an archivist he is. He’s always told me to save every moment I upload to youtube because he’s simply sort of an archivist. I thought he should have the raw versions of my moments on my channel from then on. I have known him for nearly 4 years at that point so I trusted him and knew he’d value it And then the national popularity contest boiled down to Donald Trump vs Hilary Clinton. 1 day I was at his house and showed him a video about a political protesting organization thing that I happened to discover the day before. I tried to point out their actions and share news and ethics with him, but his intuition made him say the exact opposite stance I had. I thought I was on the side of common sense. And then he talked about Gamergate and I didn’t know how to respond
We very slowly started talking about politics more often through Facebook and Twitter and even ended up having hostile conversations. I took the approach of just trying to share information to learn from each other and yet he kept trying to claim my defeat after half of everything he ever responded with. He even resorted to insulting me, a friend of his for more than 4 years. It’s absolutely 0% banter. I thought I’ve done a lot for him in his Smash career and this is how he repaid me after discovering that I believe in his opposite politics? What a loyal friend he turned out to be
On my final attempts at returning to the tournament scene, I tried asking him online as politely as I could if I could have my moment video archive hard drive back. He move about 100 miles south and kept saying excuses on why he couldn’t simply mail it. I even offered to pay for all expenses, including paying for an external SSD to copy/paste the files to. I was patient for half a year. I got it, thankfully, at least. Where was his loyalty for a friend of his for so long?
The next time I spoke to him online, he blocked me on all online accounts. There’s absolutely 0 loyalty now. I tolerated so many accusations and insults for so long just for 1 favor. After training him for years and going on tournament adventures with him, this is how he treats me now. I guess politics are more important to him now than friendship. His twitter is absolutely full of hate
Why do people care so much about politics anyways? What’s the worst it can make someone do? Vote differently than their friends? Is that a good reason to hate someone that’s shared many memories for years? If someone’s eager to demonize their own loyal friend like that so eagerly, what does that say? It’s absolutely easy to befriend someone with conflicting political opinions. Just don’t care about it. Why should friends even be concerned about who they’d vote for in big popularity contests anyways? That should really be irrelevant to their own personal bonds towards each other. How often do people even believe in live-and-let-live anymore?
But I have made 1 mistake towards him. I’m a generous altruist to a fault. I wasn’t aware I was giving away tech I didn’t need out of pity. I had no idea I was insulting him
