Today, Virgil van Dijk is the best center-back in football. But just how has Van Dijk reached the top?

The Dutchman started his career in Willem II’s youth academy and continued in FC Groningen. He had some injury problems.

“My knee was a bit unstable. I had groin problems. I had so many problems but then I had proper rehab and was out for six weeks. After that, I started playing well.”

He always loved to play in defense.

“At 16, I was a slow right-back and not good enough to play center-back. I was never an outstanding player until I played for the U19 (at Willem II) and became captain. Then everything went much better. I played sometimes for the U23s, and after that it went pretty fast.”

Virgil’s career was not typical path for a Dutch player. Normally the road will be from Groningen to a big club in Holland and then to a big club abroad. For example, Luis Suarez came to Holland and went from Groningen to Ajax to Liverpool.

For him, the bigger clubs didn’t want to touch him. Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV and AZ were not too sure about Van Dijk. Finally he decided to go in Celtic. He was great in Scotland. He won the Scottish Championship.

The next club of Virgil was English Premier League’s team, Southampton. By now Van Dijk was climbing the ladder. Some had their doubts, but they were falling by the wayside. He was playing like a beast in defense.

After playing great 3 seasons in Southampton, Liverpool decided to buy the Dutchman. The worth of transfer was 75 Million Pounds. He became the most expensive defender in history of football. Everyone was talking about the price. People was skeptical about him. But he proved that he worth more than 75M and now he is the best defender and not only defender in the world. He won Champions League and UEFA Player of the Year title. He won these titles over Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
