"We have as a certain fact that this rope did not detach from the helicopter, it suffered a rupture, a cut that is precisely the focus of this investigation," said the commander of the Air Force during a press conference in which he asked to wait for the research findings and not speculate on the causes of that cut.
In this regard, he explained that two parallel investigations are underway: one of the Attorney General's Office, which "carried out the urgent acts through the Technical Investigation Corps (CTI)" and another by a group of experts from the Colombian Air Force (FAC) .
Therefore, he said he can not refer to "additional facts" since "there is an investigation" and therefore must "respect the reservation."
In the accident, non-commissioned officers Jesús Mosquera and Sebastián Gamboa Ricaurte died who participated in an air show as part of the traditional parade of silleteros held every year at the Flower Fair in Medellín.
The two soldiers hung on a rope that came off the helicopter and carried a Colombian flag next to another device in which two other soldiers accompanied the flag of the department of Antioquia, of which Medellín is the capital.
The accident was caused by the north entrance to the Enrique Olaya Herrera airport in Medellín.
In this regard, the senior official explained that the rope to which they were subjected by harnesses is made of 95% nylon and 5% cotton.
As detailed, the rope is "strong enough" since it is made for a maximum resistance of 10,000 pounds, about 4,500 kilos.
That way, he has the capacity to transport up to ten soldiers with all his equipment, while this Sunday there were only two soldiers with the flag.
General Rueda explained that so far they have no history of accidents in these procedures that they also use in military operations for the transfer of military personnel.
With the current hypothesis, the commander of the air force explained that the possibility of a wear of the rope and probably of a bad procedure is eliminated in a preliminary way.
"However, I should expect the expert group to answer that question," he added.
He also stressed that the security protocols "were observed", although the research group also "is reviewing all the procedures that were followed before and during the exercise."
When asked about the reasons why the cut occurred, General Rueda added that they do not believe it was "a matter of resistance of the material" and are focused on "finding out what the factor of that cut was."
