Lavrov: situation with Iran is similar to Iraq in 2003

Lavrov: situation with Iran is similar to Iraq in 2003 (25 Jun 2019) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday that the current tensions over Iran were reminiscent of the build-up to the Iraq war in 2003.

Speaking at a news conference after meeting his Maldivian counterpart, Lavrov said the situation in Iran "is developing into a very bad scenario."

He said the current crisis in Iran reminded him of how the US announced "victory of democracy in Iraq" in May 2003 after sanctions against Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi President and the Iraq War.

"Well, you can draw your own conclusions on how democracy has fared over the past 16 years until now (in Iraq)," he added.

Lavrov also called for more evidence to be presented to the international community over the recent suspected attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

"We are categorically against blame being apportioned to someone without evidence," he said, adding that "blurry" images weren't accepted as concrete evidence by many.
