Lena Headey and Jerome Flynn the actors who portrayed Cersei Lannister and Bronn of the Blackwater, respectively, never spoke a single word to one another on screen. And there may be a very good reason for that.
According to a report published by The Sun, Headey and Flynn used to date in real life, but the relationship allegedly ended badly, leading to an intensely uncomfortable situation. A source cited by the gossip magazine claimed:
"Lena and Jerome have not filmed together due to a bad breakup. They kept the full extent of it secret but it was a very turbulent relationship, and it has been very awkward on set...She appears to have a genuine hate towards him."
In a word? Yikes.
While their relationship timeline remains unknown, Headey and Flynn most likely met back in the early '90s. In case you’re not up to date with Headey’s IMDB page, she appeared on the British drama series Soldier Soldier back in 1993.
"Please can we have something not out of the Bible? Can we have a poem?"
And Flynn starred on the same show from 1991 to 1995.
"Thanks for fixing Marley's, ma'am. I owe you one."
As The Sun reports, rumors of the romance started swirling in 2002, but Flynn shot down the speculation in 2003, insisting:
"We're not a couple right now, people have seen us together and jumped to conclusions."
Still, he made it a point to say,
"I can't rule out a relationship with her."
According to the tabloid, it's believed Headey called it quits on the alleged romance in 2014, three years after Game of Thrones premiered on HBO. Meanwhile, Page Six hinted that the breakup actually occurred long before the medieval fantasy show ever made it to the small screen.
So which trashy tabloid to believe? Looking at the timeline of Headey's two marriages, the latter seems more likely.
According to People, Headey married musician Peter Loughran in 2007. They reportedly separated in 2011 and divorced the following year. Meanwhile, Bustle reports that the actress got hitched a second time in 2018, marrying childhood friend and director Dan Cadan. According to Elite Daily, the couple started dating in 2014.
And it sounds like there may have been some drama between Headey and Flynn that same year. In 2014, an anonymous Game of Thrones crew member told The Telegraph:
"Jerome and Lena aren't on speaking terms anymore and they are never in the same room at the same time. It's a pity because they appeared to have patched things up for a while, but now the word is they should be kept apart at all costs."
Does that mean Headey and Flynn rekindled their romance while she was in-between marriages? At this point, it's anyone's guess. But it should be noted that neither party has ever commented on the matter, so right now, all of this is pure speculation.
That said, Cosmopolitan made a pretty damning claim regarding the matter, alleging that,
"It's actually stated in [Headey and Flynn's] contracts that they are not to star alongside each other."
But there may be no truth to that statement at all. According to The Sun, Flynn's rep categorically denied Cosmopolitan's claim.
It's worth noting that Cersei and Bronn did share just one brief scene together back in season three of Game of Thrones, as Refinery29 points out. During the scene, Cersei is spotted rushing by Bronn and her guardsmen.
So… there's that? Four seasons later, the alleged exes almost appeared on screen together a second time. Most of the main cast were featured in the Dragon Pit summit that took place during the season seven finale, but Bronn dashed out with Podrick just ahead of Cersei's arrival.
"Come on, Pod. Let's you and me go have a drink while the fancy folks talk, ay?"
Hmmmm. So, what's the takeaway here? When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die … and you do whatever it takes to avoid sharing any screen time with your ex.
