Chelsea transfer news: Chelsea make final transfer decision on starlet Reece James as ban looms

Chelsea transfer news: Chelsea make final transfer decision on starlet Reece James as ban looms The Blues’ looming transfer ban is part of the reason, but Chelsea are also looking to tie down their best young players. The Independent are reporting that James is seen as a natural successor to current first choice right-back and dressing room leader Cesar Azpilicueta. James had a brilliant season on loan at Wigan and returned to Chelsea to make his debut in a friendly out in the States last week. The 19-year-old has three years remaining on his contract but Chelsea want to make sure that their teenaged prospect is guaranteed an abundance of starting opportunities next season. Chelsea are still awaiting the decision over their transfer embargo which was imposed by FIFA over their past recruitment of foreign minors. The Court of Arbitration for Sport have yet to give their verdict on whether the two-window ban will be frozen. Chelsea’s current back-up right-back Davide Zappacosta is likely to leave Chelsea this summer, so retaining James is high on Blues chiefs’ list. Plenty of clubs were in the running to try and secure James’ signature, including Manchester United, but Chelsea will be relieved the defender hasn’t pushed for a move anywhere else. James was chosen in the Championship team of the year for Wigan and was captain in his final game of the season. Last week, James spoke of his return to Chelsea, stating it was a dream to represent his boyhood club. I’ve always had that dream of coming on and playing for my boyhood club, and I am thankful I got to fulfil it," he said. It’s a dream come true.  "It is great involvement for me, getting to play with players I have watched as I have been coming through at Chelsea, players who have won Champions Leagues, World Cups. I found out a few days before I would be coming out on the trip and I was really excited. I just take in my stride really. I remain focused and now I will try and help the squad build up to the Europa League final. It was a very good season at Wigan. "Playing week in week out at a decent level was a good achievement. This is the icing on the cake and hopefully it’s just the start." Get Chelsea latest news updates directly to your inbox Subscribe Thank you for subscribing.
