Largest Unnamed Object in the Solar System Needs You
1. Methane-Filled Lakes on Titan are “Surprisingly Deep”
The Cassini mission to Saturn and its moons wrapped up in 2017, when the spacecraft was sent plunging into the gas giant to meet its end. But there’s still a lot of data from the mission to keep scientists busy. A team of scientists working with Cassini data has made a surprising discovery: Titan’s methane-filled lakes are much deeper, and weirder than expected. Titan is an unusual world. It’s the only body, other than Earth, that has liquid on its surface.
2.Scientists Photograph a Black Hole for the 1st Time
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has revealed the first-ever image of a black hole, and with this image, and all the science behind it, they may help crack open one of the biggest mysteries in the Universe. The black hole in this image resides at the center of M87, a massive galaxy that’s in the Virgo cluster of galaxies. Called M87* (M87-star), it’s a behemoth, at about 6.5 billion times the mass of the Sun. M87* is about 55 million light years from Earth. For now, we only have this picture of M87*, but pictures of our very own black hole, Sagittarius A* at the center of the Milky Way, are still coming.
3. Largest Unnamed Object in the Solar System Needs a Name
Beyond Neptune, there's a minor red planet that rotates around the sun — and it is in need of a name. Since its discovery in 2007, scientists have called this small planet "2007 OR10," but they are now reaching out to the public to vote on a new name to submit to the International Astronomical Union for its consideration. You can vote on one of three names listed on the scientists' website: Gonggong, Holle, and Vili.2007 OR10 sits in the Kuiper Belt of the solar system — an area beyond Neptune made up of small icy objects — which is also home to Pluto.
4.Israel's Beresheet Spacecraft Crashes Into Moon
Israel's first moon lander came up just short in its historic touchdown bid this afternoon (April 11). The robotic Beresheet spacecraft, built by SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), aimed to become the first Israeli craft, and the first privately funded mission, ever to land softly on the moon. But the little robot couldn't quite make it, crashing into the gray dirt around 3:25 p.m. EDT (1925 GMT). Mission control lost communications with the spacecraft when it was about 489 feet (149 meters) above the moon's surface.
5.NASA's Parker Solar Probe Makes 2nd Daring Flyby of the Sun
NASA's record-breaking solar mission silently completed another close pass of the sun yesterday (April 4). The maneuver, called a perihelion, resulted in the closest approach at 6:40 p.m. EDT (2240 GMT) yesterday when the Parker Solar Probe was about 15 million miles (24 million kilometers) above the surface of the sun. That's about the same distance as the spacecraft reached on Nov. 5, 2018, during its first perihelion.
6. Two New Exoplanet Discovered by NASA Telescope TESS
NASA's newest planet-hunting probe has bagged another alien world, the eighth confirmed find for the young mission. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has discovered a planet orbiting the star HD 21749, which lies about 53 light-years from Earth in the faint constellation Reticulum, scientists announced today.
7. Possible 2nd Planet Spotted Around Proxima Centauri
Astronomers have detected a candidate planet circling the star Proxima Centauri, a dim red dwarf that lies just 4.2 light-years from our solar system. Proxima is already known to host one world, a roughly Earth-size planet called Proxima b. So, the potential sibling world is Proxima c. But "potential" is the keyword. Proxima b circles in Proxima Centauri's habitable zone, that just-right range of distances where liquid water could exist on a world's surface.
