President Duterte's War Over Canada's Garbage

President Duterte's War Over Canada's Garbage Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday (April 23, 2019, Manila time) told his cabinet, tongue-in-cheek, that he would sail to Canada and dump the garbage it sent to the Philippines years ago, or he would "declare war" as the country is capable. (Footage provided by Radio TV Malacanang).

"Yung basura ng (That garbage of) Canada, I want a vault prepared. I'll give a warning to Canada may be next week that they better pull that thing (garbage) out or I will set sail doon sa (to) Canada, ibuhos ko yang basura nila doon (dump the garbage there). I can not understand why they're making us a dump site," the President declared.

At the ASEAN Summit in Manila in November 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that "Canada is open to working with the Philippines to resolve this question" about the 103 container vans of garbage shipped from Canada to Manila in 2013 and 2014. He stressed that "it's now theoretically possible to get it (the garbage) back". (Video at:

Mr. Duterte was presiding over a cabinet meeting in the earthquake-stricken province of Pampanga. Half-jokingly, he said: "I will not allow that kind of shit x x x Ikarga natin uli pabalik sa kanila (let's load the garbage up and send to Canada) and celebrate because your garbage is coming home. x x x Yung iba . . . mga limang truck ibuhos mo diyan sa Canadian embassy (laughs). Putang ina ninyo. (The others, about five trucks, dump them at the Canadian embassy . . . SOBs x x x "
